Where the evidence begins
Most clinical studies of ibogaine have centered on addiction treatment, particularly opioid withdrawal and other substance use disorders. Depression outcomes are often measured in people with co-occurring mental health conditions rather than in people receiving ibogaine treatment solely for major depression.
Preliminary research and anecdotal reports suggest some participants experience fewer depressive symptoms for weeks or months. Observational studies can identify a signal, but they cannot separate drug effects from selection, expectancy, supportive environments, or changes in substance use.
